Increased Clarity Through Psychological Assessment

Psychological Assessment
Psychological assessment is an important tool for better understanding your pattern of strengths and weaknesses and potential sources of any current or historical difficulties. Common reasons for seeking evaluations include, but are not limited to, concerns regarding persistent emotional/mental health concerns, cognitive/intellectual concerns, learning concerns, executive functioning/attention concerns, and social difficulties - psychological assessment offers many options for measuring functioning in these areas to assist with treatment planning, and to increase your personal understanding of your own functioning.
At this time, assessments are offered only virtually - in-person services may be provided on a case-by-case basis in the future. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, substantial research has been conducted regarding the validity of virtual assessments (as well as virtual counseling) and has been determined to be as valid as in-person assessments.
FAQs
What is included?
A standard assessment includes evaluation of cognitive/intellectual (IQ testing), learning, speech, language, executive functioning, and behavioral and mental health functioning. Assessments are available for adults, youth, and children.
How long does it take?
The assessment process consists of 3 appointments.
The first appointment is an intake meeting, which usually lasts around 1 hour. At this appointment, background information about you and your current concerns will be gathered.
The second appointment is the comprehensive evaluation, which usually lasts between 2 and 3 hours. During this appointment, you will have many tasks to complete, such as puzzle-like tasks, tasks meant to measure your working memory and processing speed, and academic and verbal fluency tasks. You will also be sent questionnaires regarding your personality, behavior, and functioning to complete as part of the evaluation.
The third appointment is a meeting to review the evaluation results and explain the results, following which a full report will be e-mailed to you with 1 weeks' time. The third appointment usually requires 45-60 minutes' time.
Who conducts the assessment?
A licensed psychologist with experience in comprehensive evaluations leads the process, ensuring accuracy and care.

There are, of course, limits to confidentiality - such limits are: if there is reasonable suspicion that you are being harmed by others, that you are harming or seriously intend to harm others, or if you share that you have knowledge of someone being actively harmed/abused. In such cases, you would be informed of the need to break confidentiality to ensure your safety and the safety of others, and only the pertinent information (not your entire file) is shared.
What happens after?
You receive a report with insights and recommendations based on your pattern of strengths and weaknesses.
